UP Campus Tours (UPCT) will soon be sporting newly branded gear while offering their professional tours on campus, thanks to a sponsorship by Enterprises University of Pretoria (Enterprises UP).

UPCT is a student orientated business venture situated on the Hatfield Campus of the University of Pretoria (UP) – offering tours to University staff and students, visitors from other South African universities, international visitors, prospective students and their parents, school groups and the wider public. They also give tours on Open Day and at First-year Orientation to help prospective and new students find their way around campus.

“We hope the donation supports the team in their duties,” says Mr Deon Herbst, CEO of Enterprises UP. “They are ambassadors of the University and we salute them for the work they do.”

UPCT is run by the Heritage and Cultural Tourism honour’s programme students at the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, and is a vital practical component of their degree. UP Campus Tours is led under the guidance of Prof Karen Harris, Professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies and Director of the University of Pretoria Archives and Ms Charlene Herselman, newly appointed member of the Department.

“Students gain invaluable experience and acquire a range of skills including primary research in the UP Archives, people skills, marketing, finances, management and actual tourist guiding while operating UPCT,” explains Harris. “They provide an invaluable marketing service to the University and have been quipped as the young ambassadors of UP, impressing academics and dignitaries from across the continent and abroad as well as encouraging new enrolments to UP,” she adds.

It is UPCT’s mission to share their passion and enthusiasm for the University of Pretoria with their visitors, while informing them in an entertaining manner of the University’s rich past and bright future.

“All of this would, however, not have been possible without Enterprises UP whose timeous intervention and insight into the potential of this entrepreneurial project has been on-going for over a decade,” Harris concludes.
