Enterprises University of Pretoria’s (Enterprises UP) focused interventions is highlighted in this instance through its Research Solutions division, which recently conducted and completed a value chain analysis on the tourism sector and the integration of small-scale fisheries (SSF) into the tourism value chain, for the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA).

Our multi-faceted team led by industry experts, Dr. Florence Opondo, Dr. Clairetta Chagwiza, Dr. Elizabeth Mkandawire and Pedro Garcia provided customised, innovative and real-world relevance to the project. The project took place over the course of two months in the Eastern and Western Cape. The aim of the project was to explore opportunities of linking the SSF sector with the tourism value chain, resulting in recommending alternative livelihoods for people participating in SSF.

What sets Enterprises UP apart from other research organisations is quality outcomes informed by science and evidence. An innovative human-centered approach in collecting data showed to be successful, as methodologies including focus group discussions and interviews were used. This assisted in accessing a broader pool of data collection, and fair representation of groups in the sector.
