English as a Foreign language – Beginner
Brief Description
The University of Pretoria, together with Enterprises University of Pretoria, offers international students the chance to learn English at one of the top universities in South Africa. Students can become part of an exciting, vibrant campus and experience student life while improving their English skills. The English as a Foreign Language (EFL) course aims to improve the basic English proficiency of international students from countries in which English is not used as an official language. Our course series is offered at six levels: beginner, elementary, per-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and IELTS preparation.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students:
 
  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
Course Content
Grammar: the verb to be – positive, negative and question forms; simple yes/no and why-questions; personal and possessive pronouns; object pronouns; plural nouns; prepositions of place (this, that, these, those) and time (at, in, on); adjectives; can/can’t; have/has; like in questions and short answers; present simple, past simple and present continuous tenses; prepositions of time; adverbs of frequency; there is/are – negative and questions forms; imperative forms.
 
Vocabulary: functional: greetings and introductions; the alphabet, days of the week, months, time expressions, numbers, money and prices, directions; general: family, people, abilities, possessions, sport, food, interests, opinions, routines, hobbies, weather, clothing, jobs, education, holidays.
Entry Requirements
Literacy in the student’s mother tongue. Students will be given a proficiency test to confirm their level.
