Brief Description

The University of Pretoria, together with Enterprises University of Pretoria, offers international students the chance to learn English at one of the top universities in South Africa. Students can become part of an exciting, vibrant campus and experience student life while improving their English skills.
The EFL course aims to improve the basic English proficiency of international students from countries in which English is not used as an official language. Our course series is offered at six levels: beginner, elementary, per-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and IELTS preparation.

Grammar: tenses: present simple and present continuous, past simple and past continuous, present perfect (with for and since) and past simple, past perfect simple; future forms: going to, will and present continuous; verb patterns: to + infinitive; positioning adverbs of frequency; comparatives and superlatives, as ... as, comparative modifiers; quantifiers – with countable and uncountable nouns; articles: a/an, the or no article; prepositions of place and movement; conditionals: zero, first and second; defining relative clauses; modals: had to and would; subject questions; the passive: present and past simple; reported speech – changes to tense, reporting verbs – say and tell; used to; anywhere, everyone, nobody, something; giving advice; imperatives – must/mustn’t.
Vocabulary: word-building: suffixes, compound nouns, verbs and nouns, synonyms, dependent prepositions, -ed/-ing adjectives, word families, forming negatives, verbs with two objects; collocations with do, play and go; functional: describing jobs, giving instructions, using phones, reporting crimes, facts and figures, dealing with banks;
general: medical problems, sport and games, environmental issues, life events, celebrations, extreme weather, character and habits, stages of education. |

English proficiency at elementary level. Students will be given a proficiency test to confirm their level.
