Brief Description
This course is ideal for you if you are a government employee involved in environmental decision making, implementation and development of the law and policy, or a private sector employee and/or manager in the industry, (including mining staff, legal advisors, legal practitioners and environmental assessment practitioners.

The short course in Environmental Law provides you with a comprehensive overview of the fast-growing and increasingly relevant field of environmental law in South Africa, and further afield. The course covers the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 and other key environmental legislation enacted to give effect to the right to an environment not harmful to health or well-being provided for in section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. The course presents you with an opportunity to gain insight into the key norms and principles in environmental law and governance, including sustainable development, environmental justice and the polluter pays principle. It is empowering to those engaged in the environmental governance, whether in the private or public sector, particularly in an era of climate change. 

The course will be offered online over ten days with daily virtual contact sessions of approximately 2,5 hours per day. You will also need to set time aside for self-study, engagement with video content and to complete the online assignment.

  • various statutory duties of care to protect the environment and prevent pollution

  • the regulatory framework for pollution control
  • the regulatory framework aimed at conserving biodiversity and protected areas
  • who is responsible for compliance and enforcement of environmental legislation
  • relevant international law treaties, including the Paris Agreement, 2015, and South African legislation enacted in response to the problem of climate change.
