Online Course: Introduction to Database Design
Brief Description
The Online Course in Introduction to Database Design provides you with the fundamental knowledge of designing simple databases by means of entity relationship diagrams and the implementation of these designs in a relational database management system. Effective databases are essential tools in the contemporary business environment, and the ability to store, modify, extract and search for information through databases is a valuable skill in this environment. During the course, you will also become familiar with the fundamentals of structured query language (SQL), learn how to design simple small-scale databases, including how to functionally apply SQL to implement and manipulate such databases.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completing the course, you will have a clearer understanding of: Database Concepts; Entity Relationship Diagrams; Getting Started with Relational Database Management Systems; Applying the Relational Model in Relational Database Management Systems; Functional Structured Query Language (SQL).
Course Content
Theme 1: Introduction to Database Concepts
The objective of this study unit is to provide delegates with an understanding of the main principles behind managing a database environment, as well as a Database Management System.
Theme 2: Entity Relationship Diagrams
In this study unit delegates gain experience with Entity Relationship (ER) Modelling, as well as the identification of entities, rules associated with ER Modelling and finally, the relationship between ER modelling and database design and implementation.
Theme 3: Getting Started with Relational Database Management Systems
The foundational concepts of the relational database model are reviewed and delegates are introduced to the MSSQL 2008 DBMS in this unit. The core components available within the SQL Server, along with instructions on how to install each component, are also described in this unit.
Theme 4: Applying the Relational Model in Relational Database Management Systems
This study unit teaches delegates about the core features of any DBMS, the database and the core components that constitute a well-functioning database. This unit shows delegates how to create and configure databases to provide the foundation for the table and index structures that form the backbone of every database application.Theme 5Functional Structured Query Language (SQL)This study unit teaches delegates how to manipulate and retrieve data.
Entry Requirements
Prospective delegates should at least have a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and basic computer literacy.
