Brief Description
People Management is a critical component of managing in organisations as everything else required to achieve the desired output depends on having competent and willing staff. In South Africa the challenge of managing people is set against a historical backdrop in which political structures ensured that a large portion of the workforce were severely limited in respect of work opportunities and skills development, and consequently (at times) poorly motivated. The consequences of the latter must be managed in a globally competitive environment where South African companies are forced to compete internationally and managing people can be a challenging enterprise.
Learning Outcomes
The aim of this People Management module is to equip engineering managers with the key competencies they require for managing in both South African and international Engineering and Technology environments. We will explore key insights and tools to enable the successful management of people in their respective work environments.
Managing people relies on an understanding of behavioural processes in organisations as well as the practices associated with talent management. The course focuses on key elements of organisational behaviour and explains how to manage people in teams and organisations with regard to various dimensions including diversity, motivation and team performance, communication, leadership and management and organisational culture with a view to optimising performance.
