With the emergence of affordable 3D printing technology, medical science academics have started using 3D printed models in clinical anatomy to assist medical doctors. Three-dimensional imaging and printing offer several advantages, such as preservation of the biological material, identical copies of the 3D models, and tactile opportunities for clinical practitioners to engage with anatomical and skeletal material. Three-dimensional printing converts a computer-generated 3D image into a physical model, allowing the creation of human-specific anatomical models. Depending on the type of 3D scanning modality used, a 3D model is created using the generated images in DICOM (e.g., CT, MRI) or Tiff format (e.g., Micro-XCT). For example, a 3D model in polygon meshes or a dense points cloud can be created automatically using a 3D surface scanning modality (e.g., EinScan H Hybrid LED and Infrared Light Source and Handheld Colour 3D scanner). For scanning modality generating Dicom/Tiff images, images are imported into 3D imaging (e.g., Avizo) software for segmentation and 3D surface model generation. The 3D reconstructed model is then exported in the stereolithography [STL] format to make it readable by software (computer-aided design- CAD) used to design/print 3D objects. Three-dimensional printing works by “additive manufacturing,” whereby the raw material is “added” layer by layer in a predetermined fashion, achieving a precise 3D framework. A 3D printer can make any complex shape, and solid and porous sections can be combined to provide optimal strength and performance. As bones are generally monochromatic and made of hard tissue, the material naturally lends itself to printing. Therefore, it is the most accessible component of the human body to be duplicated in a 3D model with high levels of accuracy, preserving both visual and haptic values of the natural tissue. |
